English Fundamentals: Writing (HEN6401B)

"English Fundamentals: Writing" replaces Developmental English. This course focuses on the nuts-and-bolts knowledge you need to learn to become a successful writer. You will discover the structure of language, the words, phrases, and clauses that are the building blocks of sentences. You will learn the rules that govern how language is used in various social situations, including standard versus nonstandard and formal versus informal English. You will receive instruction on revising and improving sentences. Mastering the mechanics of correct written English includes learning correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. After mastering the skills of structuring sentences, you will learn the basics of good paragraphs, including how to achieve unity and coherence and how to use effective transitions between paragraphs in a longer piece of writing. A confident control of grammar, usage, and mechanics helps to ensure clear and effective communication.
